Fireball died of injuries suffered in the World 600, Dave MacDonald was killed in the Indianapolis 500, Billy Wade and Jimmy Pardue were killed in tire tests (trying to develop the safety inner liner), Joe Weatherly died at Riverside, and Larry Thomas was killed in a highway accident in January of 1965. 2. dalejrrules14 posted: 02.26.2006 - 4:16 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) this race was supposed to be 500 miles but the speeds were way slower than officials expected so the race was terminated after 417 miles 3. Not so often that a road course is christened by a NASCAR race I think ! Rather a short-lived racing course, as it did not see the 1970s. 11. Couldn't talk for 3 days from screaming so much when "Fireball" won the race. 14. awesomegordonfan posted: 09.30.2010 - 6:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Both of Holman-Moody's drivers would be dead from injuries sustained on Memorial Day Sunday, Roberts on July 2nd from his injuries, and McDonald died in the Indy 500 on the same day, leaving the team to find other drivers. 15. All the heavyweights were in this race at Augusta and these great drivers gave Holman Moody a 1-2 finish. Joe Weatherly was entered in his own '63 Mercury, but he totalled his car. A 10 lap qualifying race was held on November 16, 1963. The results can be found here: http://www.academia.edu/181758/1964_Grand_National_Season (page 5) There was one caution in the race in the fifth lap. 19. Though it's common to see number/letter combos on cars in dirt track racing even today, might this be the last time for this in Nascar? 21. A historical society dedicated to preserving the memory of this track erected it. Joe Weatherly flipped his car into a lake, rolling down a 75-foot embankment, during practice but rallied back for a top-5 in the race itself. Weatherly claimed he saw an alligator in the lake as he escaped his car, and that part of the track was fast nicknamed "Alligator Hollow" as a result, but there are no other records of one in the area. The track was so new at the time of this race the pavement hadn't really been finished yet and it made for a slick racing surface that wasn't popular with drivers. The odd grandstand placement, right by the pits but with almost no view of the race track, meant the course wasn't popular with fans either. 25.
