Good thing no one else did 2. Randall Treadwell posted: 10.13.2004 - 1:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Originally Buck Baker was flagged the winner. They had Miss Florida there to kiss the winner etc. It was only after this, that "OOPS! SCORING ERROR! "Oh and by the way, Wendell had actually lapped the field twice." It was also longtime independent Buddy Arrington's first GN race. 3. Fitz posted: 12.18.2004 - 11:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) For this race event, remember the date, 12/1/63. That was the date when Wendell Scott had become the first and only African-American racer, and generally the only minority racer, to ever win a NASCAR race to this day. I give my props to you, Scott, and hopefully Bill Lester and other minorities will do the same. I'll keep my fingers crossed... 4. I'm surprised Wendell didn't just to say "to hell with it" and not race again after something like that...he went ahead and hung around another ten years. 5. dalejrrules14 posted: 02.26.2006 - 4:19 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) wendell was a great guy.too bad he was injured in 1973.he had a few more years even though he sucked in his final 3 years.they were very racist back then and the rednecks in nascar are still.mainly fans though 6. dalejrrules14 posted: 03.04.2006 - 10:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) no offense 7. dalejrrules14 posted: 03.04.2006 - 10:14 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) and the "scoring error" is bull***T!!!!Its terible and sad. he didnt even get the real trophy 8. Scott never finished on the lead lap before this win, and his cars were unsponsored and built from spare parts. Also the last time an Impala won until the COT 20. The race was scheduled for 200 laps on the 1/2 mile DIRT track.Buck Baker was flagged the winner, but scoring re-checked revealed Wendell Scott was not scored for 4 laps in the race. Scott led laps 176-202, 2 laps ahead of Baker. The race, held on December 1st, 1963 was the third race of the 64 race schedule for the 1964 season. Richard Petty won the 1964 Championship (with the old points system) 40,252 points, 9 wins, 37 top 5s, and 43 top 10s. Greg Fielden has been A NASCAR Statistician and Historian for auto racing telecasts on network and cable television. 24. My dad was, for the most part "old south" if you know what I mean, but he always said Wendell could race with the best of them. I always thought it was pretty lame that Buck Baker didn't give that trophy to Wendell. His accomplishment alone should get him into the Nascar hall of Fame. 27. rob posted: 01.05.2012 - 11:42 pm Rate this comment: (4) (1) everything i've read about buck baker indicates that he was a real jerk. he made out with miss southern 500 in front of his wife in victory circle at the 1964 southern 500. also made derogatory remarks about fellow drivers when he was inducted into a certain hall of fame and had to be taken off stage by ned jarrett. not surprising he would keep a trophy that he din't deserve. 28. A few more modern sources do use the name "Turkey Day 200", however tellingly an article in the September 5, 1969 Florence Times-Daily states Scott won the "Jacksonville 200". 38. What's funny is that usually back then to enter a short track race you would have to have about $4000 to spend to enter the race, but since Thomas wrecked his race car and only got $60 for his efforts, that was barely enough to pay for one tire. 44. Jimmie4life posted: 07.07.2019 - 12:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I just looked at the last comment, 45... man is it wrong. Scott won this race, but because of what happened the previous year in the south with segregation in 1963, and NASCAR not wanting the trophy girl to kiss a black African-american, they came up with the scoring error. Then, after the race, they gave Scott the win, but a fake version of the trophy. Sad his only win was shadowed in infamy. 47. cautionlitenews posted: 07.10.2019 - 7:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The truly sad thing about this race, is that this is the one win Wendell Scott had in 495 Starts. He and Casey Mears have a win Percentage of .2% meaning, they are the drivers least likely to win, and won once every 500 Starts. For a win so historic, Wendell Scott truly has the dubious honor of being the least successful winning driver in NASCAR History. At least NASCAR Honored his legacy by putting him in the hall, because the man was a complete Badass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
