He was still driving for Cotton Owens, both out of Spartanburg, SC. The 1963 Mercury # 4 was driven by Rex White and was a Louis Clements-tuned car. Both White and Clements were also racing out of my hometown of Spartanburg, SC and I remember it well. My good friend Mike Clements is Louis' son and we have discussed this at length. He has photos of Rex and Louis there in their usual gold and white Marauder with red 4s on it. 18. webmaster posted: 07.11.2011 - 3:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Perry: NASCAR's official report shows Wade in the #4 for this race. 19. Does anyone know why he and the #29 didn't race in the 1964 Riveside 400. He obviously failed to qualify - was it a blown engine, wreck? Also, from pictures that I have seen, the #0 driven by Don White was entered by Holman & Moody was the same very light yellow as the Zecol cars White was driving in USAC. Also from pictures showing the color of the the #00 driven by A J Foyt was later runs a the #2 Zecol car in USAC. 20. Perry Allen Wood posted: 07.04.2013 - 12:30 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My bad. Billy Wade did indeed drive a gold and white 1963 Mercury for Rex White tuned by Louis Clements out of their Spartanburg, SC, shop. It is clearly seen in the video of the race with Wade standing next to it and Rex working on it. However, it is untrue that Weatherly refused to use a window net as Ryan Cooper stated. He refused to wear a shoulder harness. The window net didn't come along until after Billy Foster's death at Riverside in 1967. We all make mistakes as I well know. The point is to finally get it right. 23. This was after Petty's flip at Darlington in 1970? 25. Fozziebear posted: 02.13.2015 - 3:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The nets came into use in the mid-60s, in response to Little Joe's accident. Frankly, without a shoulder harness, the net probably would not have saved him. But, in answer to your question, nets were MANDATED after Petty's horrific crash. Richard got bounced around like a bull rider who couldn't get his grip loose...scary to watch, but probably available on the internet for your perusal. 26. simonracer posted: 04.11.2015 - 5:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 54 cars were entered for this, according to the Spartanburg Herald Journal. 27. Greg posted: 12.08.2020 - 2:42 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) On Dave MacDonald's memorial page there's a post-qualifying start list that has Bob Bondurant in the #27 Plymouth with Curtis Crider listed in the #61. So I presume there was a late driver change here. Bondurant drove in the Riverside Cup races in 1963 & 1965 and he was present here in 1964 as well. I suppose he should be listed as DC then? The Motor Trend magazine (which sponsored the race) also says the first few laps were run under yellow due to a damp track. Petty took the lead on the green flag which makes it lap 8 by the count. So the damp start caution lasted seven laps (see caption under the photo) and the total number of cautions was 3 (the other two for Proctor's and Foyt's crashes). Don Walker is listed in the #23 instead of #10. https://www.davemacdonald.net/gallery/closeups/nascarmotortrend.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
