Larry Thomas' last race.He was killed in a highway accident before the
next season started.

i live in jacksonville n.c.
the site of this race now has 24" pine trees on it!

The season actually ran until the last race of the calendar year for the
first time. Given that the 1964 season started in late 1963, it made for
a long campaign.

Note: Winner Ned Jarrett lost his brakes on the 80th lap at
Jacksonville, NC, and he drove the final 120 laps without brakes !

Judging by the reasons for attrition, I would guess this track was very
poor. Maybe part of the reason NASCAR did not come back.

In 1964 standings, Richard Petty would win the title by an insane 5,302
POINTS over Ned Jarrett! And yet, it still wouldn't be the biggest
margin of all time. That would come in Richard's unprecedented 27 win
season.
