This was Richard Petty's first race back after he boycotted the majority
of the season after NASCAR banned the Hemi 426 engine.

He went drag racing instead, and had no clue how to handle a drag car.
He incorrectly shifted one race, and his car veered left and went over a
banking toward a crowd of people. He ended up killing an eight-year old
boy and a seven-year old girl died from injuries sustained. He also
injured eight others who survived.

It was big to see a couple of the Chrysler factory cars back at the

for a manufacturer in Nascar History.

Note: we have the complete qualifying times, cautions datas, DNQ,.. now
available.

Note for the cautions:
8 cautions for 167 laps (include 4 red flag !)
The red flag:
Y3 = [Red flag lap 88]
Y4 = [Red flag lap 114]
Y5 = [Red flag lap 160] note = #55 blew engine/oil and pileup.
Y8 = [Red flag lap 413]

Just for info:
Y6 = one of the longest caution in NSCS history with 99 laps without a
red flag!!

Note: 8 pace laps to dry the track before the race started due to rain.

Bill Morton should be listed as a DC since he qualified the No. 56 car
but Neil Castles who DNQed the 89 car drove the 56 in the race.

Others WD/DNQ should be added:
-Clyde Lynn withdrew the No. 20 Ford
-Doug Cooper withdrew the No. 31 Ford
-Wayne Smith withdrew the No. 38 Chevrolet

This race featured a 99 lap caution for rain. I'd have to imagine that
that's the longest caution ever in terms of laps.
