Curtis Turner was scheduled to make his return to NASCAR GN racing in
this race. He had planned to drive RICHARD PETTY's Plymouth in the race
because Petty had a prior commitment with his drag racing stint. Turner
wrecked the car the second of his two qualifying laps, decided the
damage was too significant, took the DNQ, loaded it on the truck, and
left the track.

It had nothing to do with Petty's drag racing. He had quit that six
months before in March when he crashed his dragster in Georgia and a
little boy was killed. It had everything to do with Petty missing half
the season with the Chrysler boycott and not running for the
championship. He ran the night before in Maryville, TN, and let Turner
drive a 1964 Plymouth # 43. I was there.

A total of 7 manufacturers raced in the 55 races in 1965, here is how
many races each showed up to.
Chevrolet: 54
Dodge: 55
Ford: 55
Mercury: 16
Oldsmobile: 38
Plymouth: 46
Pontiac: 34

For some reason, both 1957 and 1965 were years where Chrysler went from
50+ starts the previous year to no starts for years to come.

And it's going to be quite a few years this time. IIRC, they won't be
back until '78.

Any particular reason why you posted this on this race instead of the
season finale?

@5 I accidentally must have posted on this race for some reason, I now
have these stats on the finale, too.
