He had planned to drive RICHARD PETTY's Plymouth in the race because Petty had a prior commitment with his drag racing stint. Turner wrecked the car the second of his two qualifying laps, decided the damage was too significant, took the DNQ, loaded it on the truck, and left the track. 2. Perry A. He had quit that six months before in March when he crashed his dragster in Georgia and a little boy was killed. It had everything to do with Petty missing half the season with the Chrysler boycott and not running for the championship. He ran the night before in Maryville, TN, and let Turner drive a 1964 Plymouth # 43. I was there. 3.
