Petty would alternate between the #42 and the #43 over the course of this season but this was the only race he would win that year with his father Lee Petty's famous number. Bobby Issac battled Richard Petty for the lead early and led the first several laps. Petty stormed ahead when Issac blew a tire and lost four laps getting it changed. Despite having to pit Issac's Ford was a hot piece and made his laps back up to finish second. Tiny Lund started shotgun on the field but came through the grid fast to go from worst to first in just over 100 laps. It got racy at the front between Lund, Petty, and Issac's lapped car, the cars made contact and all got each other loose, but Lund started to pull away afterward. After a caution Petty was back on Lund's tail and the two made contact with Lund getting sideways for a moment. Tiny won the battle but not the war as a mechanical failure eventually sent him for the sidelines. With no serious challenges left Richard drove off and took the victory. Buddy Baker lost a wheel and hit the wall at one point. The damage wasn't terminal and he still finished in the top-15. Baker sat in his car smoking a cigarette while his team, including his dad Buck Baker, repaired it. David Pearson's championship season kicks off with a top-10. 8. rob posted: 02.06.2015 - 1:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Possibly the best run ever by Roy Mayne. 9.
