This was the first Grand National/Winston Cup start for future two-time
Indy 500 (1973, 1982) winner Gordon Johncock.

Paul Goldsmith picked up his first Cup win in eight years with this
victory. This was his first win at Daytona International Speedway, his
last win prior to this had been the famous last race on the old Daytona
Beach and Road Course in 1958.

Gene Petro finishes 22nd and fails to qualify for the Daytona 500. As
such this race became the only Cup start for the late Indiana racer.

The soon to be iconic red #71 K & K Insurance Dodge team owned by Nord
Krauskopf makes its big debut and turns in a great run. With the
previously mentioned Gordon Johncock, a rising USAC Champ Car talent, at
the wheel and Harry Hyde making his debut as a NASCAR crew chief the
team immediately qualified and finished in the top-10 with their car
rightly dubbed the "K&K Insurance Special."
