It was noteworthy for several reasons; one being that it was the only time Elmo Langley ever qualified on pole in his NASCAR career. It was also the first and only time I got to see the legendary Curtis Turner in action, and he didn't disappoint. Maybe most interesting, Curtis's mount was a Holman&Moody Ford Fairlane (white with red numbers), the first time the smaller Fairlane competed (it had been entered in Bristol but tech inspectors wouldn't pass it. Curtis said "They didn't say anything until we started running fater than everybody else"). This came at the height of the political battle over Ford's eligibility for the SOHC engine, and running the smaller Fairlane with a wedge engine (which NASCAR allowed to run with 2 four-barrel carburetors) was a way for Ford to hedge its bets. Curtis drove the wheels off the Fairlane, swapping the lead all evening with David Pearson, but Pearson prevailed. A few days later the SOHC controversy boiled over and Ford pulled out from April until August, when it appeared at Atlanta with the famous "Yellow Banana" Galaxie for Fred Lorenzen. Thereafter, the Fairlane was Ford's standard-bearer. 2. Unknown posted: 12.29.2018 - 10:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Elmo Langley's only career pole award 3. Presumably, there must have been a driver swap at some point, possibly even before the race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
