Marvin Panch had to get out of the car on lap 358 due to the seat rubbing against an old racing injury. Petty got into Panch's 1965 Plymouth, and took it to victory lane. Even though Petty was the driver when the car crossed the checkered flag, the victory is credited to Panch because he was the starting driver. 2. The injury was a back burn Panch suffered three years earlier. 2) When Buddy Baker suffered a blown engine during the 44th lap, he was setting a pace of 145.291 MPH. 3) David Pearson led by as many as two laps during his lead from the 48th to 90th laps. 4) Pearson pitted on lap 138, was back in on lap 155 during a caution to get gas, and then came back in three laps later to get tires. Twelve laps later, Pearson blew the right rear tire in the fourth turn, and Paul Goldsmith took the lead Pearson made his next pit stop 51 laps later, but couldn't get the car started after taking on gas and tires. That gave Goldsmith a comfortable lead. 5) But apparently Goldsmith was having troubles himself, as his car "sounded like a machine gun down the front stretch with rapid back firing." Goldsmith pitted on lap 278 and had problems with his ignition, allowing Pearson to retake the lead. But Pearson's right front wheel broke into turn 4, forcing him out of the race and Panch in first. 7. rob posted: 06.14.2014 - 8:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Panch was driving a Belvedere and Spencer a Fury. Buck Baker was in a Chevelle and Roy Mayne in an Impala. That made 11 distinctive makes and models of cars in the top 11. 8.
