Fred Lorenzen's yellow #26 didn't really fit the tech specs but NASCAR let them run anyway. He was doing well, even leading 24 laps before a crash destroyed the car. I wonder why Fred Lorenzen drove for Junior Johnson in this race instead of Holman-Moody, they decide not to enter or something? 2. Some of my memories: Lee Roy Yarbrough's (sp?) purple Dodge wasn't allowed to start because it was found to be "too low." Lester Maddox, the Georgia governor, said the "Gentlemen, start our engines!" thing. At the end of the race, it was a duel between Petty and Buddy Baker. On Baker's last pit stop, Ray Fox fell over the pit wall backwards as Buddy pulled out. Beautiful, sunny day. 5. Ford pulled out of NASCAR because they felt NASCAR's rules favored the Mopar gang. With no factory support, John Holman approached Junior and asked if Junior would build them a car to use at Atlanta. A little while later, Bill France came to Junior and asked him if he could do anything to help get Ford to come back into NASCAR. Junior built the radical "Banana", and when it did so well in the race, Bill France was able to convince Ford to come back. 6. Was he just too slow or was there something illegal with his car? David Pearson would be the last person I'd expect to see fail to qualify for a Grand National race, especially in 1966. 7. He refused to fix the car and pulled it from the race because he felt that NASCAR was allowing other cars to race that were blatantly in violation of the rules. Petty won the race with this as the first of his six career wins at Atlanta. 12.
