This was a car he entered off and on through the 1966, '67 and '68 seasons. 4. RaceFanX posted: 01.04.2021 - 8:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor: #26 Curtis Turner- Holly Farms 5. Turner had the suit soaked in fireproofing chemicals like all driving attire in this era was during the lead to the race. Turner certainly gave the fans an on-track show as he was in control from the green flag onward until a bad pit stop put him down the running order. He then charged back into contention while making a rare start in Junior Johnson's Holly Farms #26 Ford, having initially been lined up to race it at Bowman-Gray before swapping to this race when rain postponed that race. Legend says that all the dust and dirt from this 200-lapper ruined the three-piece suit but that I couldn't confirm. The end of this race was shaping up to be a great battle between David Pearson, Richard Petty, and Turner but a crash in the closing laps by J.D. McDuffie brought out a yellow that prematurely cut the battle short. A news report from the era said the last five laps were run under caution. After Turner's pit issues Petty inherited the lead only to have Bobby Allison motor past before the Silver Fox took control en route to the win. Allison dropped from contention and lost 10 laps late in the race when his pole sitting #2 Chevelle developed an overheating issue. 6. It would be awesome to see someone have a throwback driver uniform to that suit at the next Darlington throwback weekend. Obviously it would be a modern uniform, but it could be made to look like a suit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
