Note the absence of Junior Johnson from this race.

Junior was disqualified just prior to the race for cheating. I
distinctly remenber Junior on the track loud speaker stating

"I'm not cheating"

Does anyone know what he was accused of?

bobby allison was picked in a motorsports writers and broadcasters poll
by chris economaki to win. he was the only media member to pick the j.d.
bracken chevelle driver. though allison was nowhere near the front in
the 500, he did win the preliminary 20-lap consolation race two days
before as he charged from the rear of the field.

This must have been perhaps the best Southern 500 of the era by modern
standards, with 6 laps seperating the top 10, the leaders on the same
lap and 28 lead changers.

Earl Balmer climbed and rode the guardrail for several hundred feet in
his crash
