Gurney ran his car so hard the engine quit, but another great versatile driver won; Parnelli Jones. Nice try, NA$CAR! 3. Cliff Garner, who had retired the first day, relieved Bo Reeder in the #80 on Jan. 29. Apart from the poor Billy Foster, another DNS was Cale Yarborough who escaped uninjured from a very similar accident to the one of the Canadian driver, with a '67 Ford. Foster, driving Rudy Hoerr's '67 Dodge Charger, lost the brakes at the end of the ultra fast back chute and hit the turn nine retaining wall. The upper half of his body was out of the car by the window at the instant of the impact and he was killed instantly. It is following this tragedy that security nets at the window became mandatory on stock cars. 4. They had red and silver Mercury Cylclones numbers 15 and 16 respectively. I have photos of the cars, live in Spartanburg, and have known the Moores very well for 50 years. 7. If they wanted a cup driver to win, then he would have instead of Parnelli. Grow up :) 14. ii posted: 07.24.2014 - 1:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Since both Yarborough and Foster completed qualifying they should be listed in the running order as "Did Not Start," finishing 45th and 46th respectively. 15. While Jones had the dominant car in this one one of the drivers who did pass him here was his Bill Stroppe teammate Curtis Turner who got by him early in the race. Turner had to resort to some, um, interesting tactics to pull that move off though as he straight-lined the esses driving through the dirt. Turner crashed out not long after but you can't say he wasn't going for with everything he had in this one. 22.
