Both Mario and A.J. won the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500 (the only two drivers in history to do that). A.J. won the 24 Hours of LeMans, and Mario won the Formula One Championship. A.J. is a 4-time Indy winner, and Mario is a 10-time Grand Prix winner. It may never end. 4. The website says it was Nazareth, PA, but I remember seeing on a TV show he was born in Italy. 5. Steve posted: 01.11.2007 - 11:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mario was indeed born in Italy (Montana, Italy), as his name would suggest. And I should correct myself; he won 12 (not 10) Formula One races, including events in Long Beach (California), Monza (Italy), Hockenheim (Germany), and two in Jarama, Spain. You can see a biography and some photographs of his accomplishments at: http://www.formula1.com/archive/halloffame/driver/242.html One-two finish for the Holman-Moody team. 6. In Andretti's book, he mentions being held up by the Ford team and having to trick his way into the win here. I can see why Ford wouldn't keep him on, they wanted Lorenzen to win supposedly... 14. Ryan posted: 07.27.2011 - 3:14 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) It took Earnhardt 20... Earnhardt is singled out all the time because how close he came so many times. He lost the race about every way you could (blown tire on last lap, ran out of gas, wrecked at the end, pit strategy, getting passed at the end, catching the whole field except Marlin). There has been a lot of other drivers that attempted to win this race many times and they didn't win. Look at Martin, Stewart, the Labonte's, Rudd, took Baker a while, the Busch's, Rusty Wallace, took Pearson longer than what people thought, Donnie Allison, Schrader, Kyle Petty, Harry Gant, took Darrell Waltrip a while Jeff Burton, Ned Jarrett, Joe Weatherly, and Neil Bonnett. So there has been a lot of drivers not even get there. I think it's awesome that Earnhardt could actually be right there all those times in position to win. 18. RaceFanX posted: 01.01.2012 - 2:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The weather was much colder than usual for the 500 this year and, as in the 1992 Indianapolis 500, those cold temps equalled tires getting less grip and a lot of spins and crashes as such. Andretti moved the front early with a gamble to pit later than the other leaders. A spin by Paul Goldsmith as he was right alongside Andretti let Mario pit under a caution and greatly helped him but it was a rough day for the 1958 Daytona Beach race winner as Goldsmith was eventually sidelined by engine woes later. Andretti had a quick Ford but David Pearson, Fred Lorenzen and Darel Dieringer all had cars that could keep up with the Italian-American Indy Car ace. Pearson blew the engine in his Dodge Charger just as Andretti passed him for the lead and Dieringer faded back and had to settle for sixth but Fast Freddie hounded Super Mario for the rest of the race en route to making it a Holman-Moody 1-2. Lorenzen had a chance to win it late when on the last round of yellow flag pit stops his team got his white-and-blue #28 Ford out in front of Andretti's #11 Ford. Andretti's car had the power though and he quickly regained the lead (it appears he did so on the restart). Curtis Turner won the pole in the only Chevelle entered in the race and led the opening lap but his Chevy wouldn't see the checkered flag. Motor issues sidelined the Smokey Yunick entry before the 3/4 mark. Jerry Grant and Jim Hurtubise both score top-10 finishes despite spinning on the penultimate lap of the race, both drivers spun in oil from Richard Petty's blown engine. The King also finished in the top-10 despite the DNF but the oil from his car brought out a caution for the final lap that let Mario cruise to the win. 19. Ireland's car was an unsponsored '65 Dodge fielded by Ray Fox, as shown in the below pic. It's not likely that Ray would field a Dodge and a Ford in the same race, so I knew something didn't add up. Parnelli Jones in Bud Moore's Mercury Cougar was 3rd. And Saturday before the 500 the Permatex 300 for Modified-Sportsman Cars was won by Jim Paschal in a 1964 Plymouth Sportsman for Friedkin Ent. Second was Paul Goldsmith, followed by Freddie Fryar, Gil Hearne and Donnie Allison. This was the fourth year in a row the 300 was won by a Grand National regular, Tiny Lund in 64, Marvin Panch in 65 and Curtis Turner in 66, and there was talk of finding a way to keep the GN drivers from running in the future. 31. He asked to be given the dyno sheets...was told no. He then asked for the engine assigned to someone else since they were all the same. Again told no. Mario had to lean on his Ford contacts to get an equal engine for the race. 32.
