A large accident on the opening lap, caused by a wet track on the high
part of the racetrack, sent five cars, Jim Paschal, Wendell Scott, Doug
Cooper, John Sears and another unknown driver speeding off the first
corner. Paschal, Cooper and Sears all flipped their cars, with Cooper
and Sears able to continue, but Paschal had to retire after the accident
broke his steering.
