I was at the 1967 Firecracker 400. I remember Dick Hutcherson apparently
crossing the finish line first. Was he penalized or something? What
happened?
I was a nineteen year old star-struck racing enthusiast so maybe I just
saw and heard it wrong, but I though Hutcherson won the race.

Withdrew:
#00 Paul Marino (self-owned 1965 Plymouth)
#31 Don Tarr (Ray Fox 1965 Dodge)
#62 Ken Spikes (Harold Collins 1967 Pontiac)

All of these were due to a pileup in the qualifying race. Two of these
drivers would not have qualified anyway (probably Marino and Spikes.)

Just looking off-hand, this might be one of the best top-10's top to
bottom in a race. Usually you'll have a couple of the top competitors
DNF or have issues, or a driver further down will come up into the
top-10. But everyone in the top 10 won at least 7 times in their career,
with the exception of James Hylton, who still won 2 races. And Richard
Petty finished 11th. A very impressive finishing order.

Scratch that. Bettenhausen's flip occurred during the race. He spun the
car into the infield earth wall and very gently turned over. After
looking at photos I'm actually a little surprised he didn't continue.

first NASCAR Grand National win at Daytona. This victory, the first of
nine points-paying Cup wins here for Cale, kicked off a string of
three-straight Daytona wins for Yarborough and the Wood Brothers' potent

Mario was very lucky that could've easily been a fatal accident if
someone had hit him.
