Richard Petty's first and only Southern 500 victory, a race he would
have bad luck in over the years, keeping him from winning another
Southern 500 or two

Pearson was great at Darlington and won many spring events there and
Southern 500's. That probably has something to do with Petty not winning.

Richard Petty was absolutely dominant in this one, leading all but 19
laps and winning by 5 laps. This must have been a pretty boring race to
watch

Please. This was what NASCAR was like until the 80's. If it's boring,
then you can watch the current races. And besides, a race doesn't have
to be boring just because someone dominated.

Note: Following the Southern 500, Roy Mayne, a technical sergeant, left
for Thailand where he will help direct the attack against the Viet Cong.
He will joint the 338 th combat supply group as an administrative
supervisor. The 338 th is the Air Force group which has been carrying
out devastating air strikes deep into North Vietnam. In a interview
Mayne said: I will be back in Grand National racing as soon as I can. I
hope to come back with a new car in 1969.

I agree. He had such a stellar winning record on so many tracks, just
not Darlington in the Southern 500.
