Mario Andretti, of course, had NASCAR experience (and a win in the Great American Race), but he didn't appear in a stock car after winning the Formula One championship in 1978. 2. Montoya's best World Championship finish was 3rd in 2002 and 2003; both years he raced for Frank Williams' legendary team. However, JPM is a CART (now Champ Car) Champion in his rookie season (1999), and he won the Indy 500 in his first and only attempt (2000). 5. Ryan posted: 09.14.2019 - 5:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I would say that it would be odd that a few open wheel drivers raced in this race? Or is it? The week before Jimmy Clark raced in the F1 series at Mexico City winning the race and winning at Watkins Glen a few weeks before that. The Mexico City race was the last race of the season for them. I know he was very close to the United States, but of all places why Rockingham and why was it the only time he raced in NASCAR? Why not Daytona or even Riverside? Perhaps he planned to race at Daytona or Riverside eventually, but unfortunately passed before he could do so. This race he raced for the legendary Holman-Moody team, so something had to have been in the works for it. I'm surprised nascarman hasn't investitgated this more (he may have). "Jimmy Clark comes to Rockingham". The USAC guys raced in Hanford, California the week before as well at the 1.5 mile paved superspeedway. Fireball Roberts once won a race there in Cup. USAC wouldn't race again for four more weeks at Phoenix. Both A.J. Foyt and Gordon Johncock raced in this event and both recorded top-5 finishes. Impressive. These guys loved to race and race anything. One week you're in California and the next you're in Rockingham. The travel for this at the time had to have been difficult. 23. possum posted: 09.14.2019 - 9:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 - I'd guess it was a Ford promotion of some kind. Both Foyt (who would shortly buy the rights to the four-cam Ford Indy engine, which then became known as the Foyt-Ford engine) and Clark had a close association with Ford at the time. Incidently, you do know they had jet airplanes in 1967, right? It's not like they had to book a Pullman cross-country. Travel from California (or Mexico) to North Carolina was probably easier then than it is today. But you're right about Foyt loving to race - besides the full Indy schedule and Le Mans, Foyt ran Banjo Matthew's car in at least 15 stock car races (where the other 8 were is left as an exercise for the student). 24. If it was or wasn't difficult I'm still at awe with the fact that people raced 3,000 miles away a week apart regardless if they took a plane(s) or drove. 25. It's a shame Clark didn't get the chance to race again. It's crazy that the F1 series in 1968 1st and 2nd race were four months and eleven days apart. Had they been closer together... I wonder if Clark was ever offered to race at Riverside or Daytona before he died? 27. Unfortunately the Italian's Plymouth failed to qualify but not by much. This was sadly his only NASCAR attempt, like Clark he too died the following year in a racing accident (he crashed in a German hill climb). 36. thecautionlightnews posted: 09.23.2020 - 11:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jim Clark (I am NOT calling him Jimmy), becomes the first Scottish person to race in NASCAR.
