Note: LeeRoy Yarbrough was black flagged for jumping the restart after
the 11th and final caution flag (lap 301). LeeRoy jumped Cale Yarborough
and roared into the lead. A lap later, John Bruner, field director, gave
LeeRoy the black flag, calling him into the pits for a stop & go. Cale
Yarborough gained a commanding lead 29 laps from the end with 18 seconds
in front of LeeRoy. Cale was never threatened down the stretch in
winning the Atlanta 500 for the second straight year. LeeRoy has reduced
the gap to 9 seconds at the checkered flag.
