It was one of the most exciting finishes in early Daytona history, and was broadcasted on the Wide World of Sports with Chris Economaki. 2. LeeRoy would win each of these events in 1969, completing the Triple Crown. This feat would later be known as the "Winston Million" which Bill Elliott won in 1985. 3. MacTavish's car literally split in half from the force of the impact and the driver's compartment, minus the front end, twirled to a stop where it was hit head on by Sam Sommers. MacTavish sadly lost his life in the crash. 15. He was the driver who had the most 500 starts at that point and therefore was the 1st driver to make 10 starts in "The Great American Race." Also, why is Don Biederman given credit for 51st place, when he did not start the race? When I first started looking at this site, Biederman was listed with only 1 Daytona 500 race and that was in 1968. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thank you. 22. Biederman could not start, so 1st Alt. Andy Hampton was then added to the field. 23. Mercury Cyclone (Owner: Junior Johnson) Ickx, a young standout in F1 at the time, was actually entered in this race in a second Junior Johnson car, a car which had been Cale Yarborough's winning car from the year before (Junior had purchased it from the Wood Brothers). Jacky had never raced a stock car before or even been to a NASCAR event before being entered in this one, and his effort came to an end on February 18th, just 2 days before the Twin 125s. Ickx hit the wall off turn 4 and pancaked it hard. Jacky was unhurt, but the car was totaled. LeeRoy Yarbrough, the team's primary driver, also crashed in practice after blowing a motor, and Johnson had only one backup car left to use-which went to LeeRoy. As such, Ickx withdrew without getting a chance to compete in the qualifying races and never made a NASCAR start. Source: 35.
