Note: Roy Tyner initially dnq (#9) started the race in last position (first alternate driver) after the withdraw of Gray. Note: the first 24 positions on the grid per qualifying time. Position trough 25 to 36 = order of the finish of the qualifying run. 2-lap qualifying run and 3 qualifying session. 5. And what exactly do you mean by the "finish of the qualifying run"? 6. Lee Roy Yarbrough was running second and was also involved in the crash. He managed to keep his battered car running and took the checkered flag under caution. 8. Motors The King was still sore from a hard wreck at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway a week before this one but despite some broken ribs and having his hand taped up he soldiered on anyway. He was able to stay on the lead lap for quite a while but ultimately had to come in and hand the #43 Ford Torino over to relief driver Donnie Allison, who had gone out early in the race. The #43 broke and retired while Allison was at the wheel. 10. Rob posted: 09.01.2020 - 7:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Anyone know the story of why Soapy Castles was in the Ray Fox car ? 11. ScottB posted: 09.01.2020 - 10:38 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Buddy Baker left the Ray Fox team early in the season to move over to the Cotton Owens operation. Fox did a bit of a driver by committee thing to fill out the rest of the season. Castles was a convenient fit as an independent, he wasn't under contract so he could just leave his own car at home on weeks when he had an offer to drive in better equipment. 12.
