Terry Maynard posted: 10.29.2014 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The 11th caution of the race occurred on lap 462, not 420 as shown. Richard Petty had just passed David Pearson on lap 461 to get back on the lead lap. This left Pearson, Buddy Baker, and Petty as the only 3 cars on the lead lap. Seconds later, a beer can that was thrown from the grandstands hit the windshield of Petty's Ford. On the very next lap, the caution came out for debris (the beer can on the track). Pearson and Baker pitted under the caution, giving the lead to Petty on lap 465. Petty was able to hold them both off for the win. Baker finished in third, on the lead lap - not 4 laps down as shown. Several beer cans and other debris were thrown onto the track during the race as many of the fans were showing their displeasure at drivers who had boycotted the race at Talladega two weeks earlier. 6. Apparently a driver (or two) gave the head's up to a photographer that they should stand at a certain spot in the infield to get "good pictures of the race"... the spot was near where Brickhouse was wrecked. 9. Imagine how many lives could have been saved had a driver's union demanded safety features that instead were only implemented after a death. NASCAR dragges their knuckles, head in the sand on safety for decades, and Talladega was a prime example. 12.
