He also made a few starts down South. 10. randy posted: 10.27.2008 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I was at this race and parnelli jones was on the pole, but had to start at the back because they used illegal tires qualifying. He was passing five or six cars a lap and took the lead by lap 80 and almost lapped the entire field until his clutch broke. the most amazing performance i have ever seen, 11. In his three Winston Cup starts (all of them took place at Riverside), he never finished higher than 30th and DNF'd in all of his starts. 34. Jim Thurman posted: 12.26.2016 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Frank Deiny wasn't a road racer, he was a short track racer. He competed regularly at Saugus Speedway and Ascot. 1) The term "road course ringer" didn't exist and 2) Since more events took place at Riverside and Sears Point instead of ovals, local short track racers best opportunities (sometimes only opportunities) took place at road courses. Making their only starts on road courses does NOT make them "road course ringers." Frank Deiny became a noted chassis builder on the West Coast and wound up building some Trans-Am cars as well. 35. Scott B posted: 12.27.2016 - 11:17 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Yes, Riverside included a half mile oval that shared the original turn 9 of the road configuration in the early 1960's, and also a drag strip that operated off and on through the track's history. All of it's gone now, redeveloped into shopping centers and housing. 37. Dennyfan05 posted: 12.21.2020 - 3:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 1971 was the last year for triple digits and the 1981 running of this race fetured the last time a letter was used. 48. possum posted: 12.21.2020 - 9:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @46 - I beleive 3 digit numbers and letters were both ruled out in Cup in 1960 (of course, 3 digit car numbers continue to exist today, the rule is that only 2 digits can be shown on the car, thus 100 becomes 00, etc). As Dennyfan noted, 3-digit numbers and/or letters continued to be allowed in companion events with the Winston West series. 49. Danish_Pie posted: 12.22.2020 - 7:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 1963 was the last year letters were on the cars and recorded by NASCAR as part of the number. Even though letters appear on results for combination races with the west series in 1964, '72, '74, '75, and one driver in both 1966 and '81, they weren't actually physically on the car. They were only used to differentiate West drivers from Cup drivers for scoring. Triple digit numbers still had several sparse appearances in the 60's at non-companon everts. The last time a triple digit number was used anywhere besides Riverside was Swede Savage's Grand National debut at Hickory in 1967. As @47 said, 1971 at Riverside was the last year triple digit numbers were used before the practice was stopped outright. 50.
