Unfortunately, his promising career was shortened as he retired just a few seasons after this win due to a recurring neck injury. 4. Petty made the call to bring Hamilton back into the pits for left-side tires after putting right sides on the initial stop. Classic race that fails to be even a blip on most NASCAR fan's radar 9. And @12, that actually came from Ken Squier, who uttered those exact words during the 1995 Daytona 500, when Ricky Craven was moving up into the top ten early in that race. Richard Petty was in the booth with Squier and Ned Jarrett that day, and followed up by mentioning Hamilton winning this race, the 1970 Daytona 500. 17. b4il3y posted: 12.24.2013 - 2:54 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) #12. Bobby Watson was second in a winged Dodge for H.B Ranier, and Ron Grana, Louis Wusterhausen and Iggy Katona rounded out the top 5. Next after the 125's was Friday's Citrus 250 for the Grand American Circuit. This was won by James Hylton in the #48 '69 Camaro followed by Wayne Andrews, Tiny Lund, Charlie Blanton and Bob Burcham. This was Hylton's first big time win, coming just a week before his first GN win at Richmond. Then the Permatex 300 for Nascar's Late Model Sportsman Div was run on Saturday. Tiny Lund won in Bondy Long's #29 Pepsi Sponsored 1966 Ford. The rest of the top 5 were Red Farmer, Donnie Allison, Sonny Hutchins, and Hooker Hood. Bobby Allison was 39th and Harry Gant was 40th 33. RaceFanX posted: 08.23.2019 - 12:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Buddy Arrington had a brand new #5 Dodge Daytona for the 1970 season but totaled it out here with a hard crash at full speed into the outside wall. He hit the wall so hard the big wing on the Charger actually broke with its top cross bar ripping off the car then flying 60 feet down the track spinning in the air. Following the wreck NASCAR mandated that all of the wing cars would have to have a steel cable to anchor the wing to the frame to avoid a repeat of this incident. John Sears actually drove under the flying piece of Arrington's wing as it soared over the track. He was apparently quite scared it was going to hit him. Arrington later said this was the worst wreck of his entire NASCAR career; as mentioned earlier it left him with several broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. The Daytona was a goner and Arrington never got another one although he would be back on the track a few months later. 39. I'm not sure if its still in Hamilton's colors or if it was later converted over for preservation as Richard Petty's #43 (the Pettys only built a couple Superbirds for the season). There appears to be a Superbird that they found the car and thought it was Hamilton's car only to realize later it was actually Petty's Plymouth but I'm not sure if that's the same car or not. 40.
