This one was a "spin and win" for Petty as the Pride of the Randleman lost it coming into the pits and looped the Petty Blue #43 wing car around. Petty avoided damaging the car, got back going again, and buried the competition en route to a victory with a race-record time. 6. While Petty spun into the pits, allowing him quick access to new tires afterward, Yarborough got the worst of it with left front fender damaged that required his team to remove it, costing him time. Yarborough still came to finish second in the race behind Petty. The spin left Petty's car with its share of issues though as the #43 lost its brakes as a result and Petty ran the last 100 miles without them, using a tactical mix of shifting into low gear and turning off the ignition to slow down for pit stops. The late Dick Brooks brought his Plymouth home third to tally the first of his career-high 15 top-5s in 1970. Polesitter Bobby Allison had ignition problems in his year-old Dodge but brought it home fourth. Petty's Daytona 500-winning teammate Pete Hamilton had his own issues but still finished fifth in his Petty Blue Superbird, if albeit 17 laps down. The New York Times reported that during the later stages of this year a giant fight broke out in the crowd for some reason. A five-minute brouhaha ensued before police broke it up but not before some of the participants ended up with bloody noses or bruised jaws. 7. Like multiple other races in the season he ran it under local dodge dealer sponsors. I don't actually know what dealership as the photos of it are too grainy to read. Bunkie Blackburn was sponsored by Pepsi, and drove the same car Jim Hurtubise ran at Daytona.
