Frank Warren looked to be en route to his first Grand National Victory
but retired after 113 laps because of brake problems.

Richard Petty's first win for someone other than Petty Enterprises, he
scores the first of two wins here for Don Robertson who fielded his dirt
track cars during the 1970 season

Outside of his 71 laps led in this race, Frank Warren only led 1 lap in
his other 395 career starts.

The factory entries weren't at their peak in this one. Poor Ron
Keselowski, crashing out while being in the lead.

This must be one of the strangest races in NASCAR history. They must
have drawn for starting positions here, because I doubt that Larry
Baumel, a driver who only ever scored two top 10's in 45 starts, could
start from pole. I also doubt that John Halford, who only ever scored
one top 10 in 41 starts, could start in second.

Regardless, this was Baumel's only career pole and the only time
Halford, a driver who had "SPONSOR WANTED" on the side of his car, led
any laps. Also the only time Ron Keselowski led any laps.

They did qualify and Johnny Halford from up Interstate 26 in Spartanburg
was very experienced at Columbia Speedway. He time trialed second fair
and square that night. I was there.

This was Baumel's only pole.
