Now that's a shame. Should be a rule that an official winner has to
finish a race & take the checkered flag.

fred lorenzen led many laps in a comeback race for him. he was driving a
car owned by then speedway owner richard howard. last 90 minutes were
shown live on "ABC's wide world of sports".

as for myself's comment about relief drivers... there were many times
back in the day when it took two drivers to bring the car home. the cars
were a lot harder to drive then except for the winged cars.

This was Donnie Allison's first win in which his brother Bobby didn't
finish second.

Jim Pascal subbing in the #43 for Richard Petty, who was injured in a
crash at Darlington earlier in the season. The team skipped some of the
other scheduled races till Petty could return, but ran here with a sub
because of the prestige and money of the World 600.
