Petty actually won the pole for this race, but it was rain delayed, and
between the time he won the pole and the race, he was injured at
Darlington and couldn't race. That created a controversy over how many
poles Petty actually won. NASCAR lists him with 126, but his retirement
tour listed him with 127. I got this information from The Complete
Statistical History of Stock Car Racing by Richard Sowers.

Terrible attendance could be attributed to a number of things. I missed
the race due to my sister's graduation. The absence of the very popular
Petty and Memorial Day vacation plans didn't help either.

Was Petty really in a STP Dodge? He ran Plymouths in 1970 and I didn't
think that deal with Granatelli came through until 1972.

rain.

A couple of driver changes:

Donnie Allison qualified the No. 27 before LeeRoy Yarborough started the
race in it.

LeeRoy Yarborough qualified the No. 98 before David Pearson started the
race in it.
