The car was a former Petty car; the Petty's simply borrowed their old car back for the race and changed the number from 23 to 43. The car was even still white with red and gold trim! 6. He was driving the car like you would on asphalt, while Richard Petty was swinging his car sideways and sliding around the corners. While he was following Petty after losing the lead, Benny thought he'd try throwing his car into the corner the way Richard was doing just to see if he could race on dirt like The King. As soon as he came off of turn 4 and prepared to throw his car sideways into turn 1, the engine blew. BP ended the story with "so I never got to know if I could race on dirt like the King or not!" 12. Ken B posted: 01.27.2016 - 9:42 am Rate this comment: (4) (0) I was at this race-- stationed at Ft. Bragg at the time, and a great racing fan. Until now, I never knew that this was the last dirt race for Winston (Sprint) Cuppers. I only remember being thrilled to see Richard Petty in person, since being from Oklahoma, we never got to see live Nascar racing. Watched a lot of supermodified racing there. 13. rm posted: 12.01.2017 - 12:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The area where this track once was is now mostly used as a parking lot for nearby events, such as the state fair, NC State football games, or local expos/shows. 14. His name often comes up in the "best driver never to get a win" discussions. 15. Bristol Motor Speedway will be covered in dirt for its Spring event. 17. BobsonDugnutt posted: 10.18.2020 - 10:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was run at night. I found some photos of the drivers after the race online and Petty's car seems to actually be black... but yet again it was a black and white photo and colorizing apps are not always very good. https://www.flickr.com/photos/north-carolina-state-archives/48793069078/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
