Personally, I miss calling it the "Winston Cup Series"! 2. biffle16 posted: 03.17.2007 - 2:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree. 3. It was one of my favorite "Road" courses. I seem to remember no tickets being needed to get to the area near the Esses (point on the track where they put in what they call chicanes today. Back then they just curved the roadway like a serpent). 5. It was technically Winston Cup Grand National Division until it became just Winston Cup. I seem to recall the name being tweaked sometime in the 1990s but I can't remember the details off the top of my head. Possibly the addition of "Series" at the end. 6. Allison was then on his way to victory when he had to pit for gas with ten laps to go, giving the win to Ray Elder. 10. It wasn't a case of him winning because of better fuel mileage. 12. His brother Richard was crew chief for the #96, and his father Fred was the official team owner. 19. The 8th-place finisher was 22 laps down, and the 11th-place finisher dropped out with 34 laps to go. I wonder what it would have been like to watch the last hour or so of this race, with only about a dozen cars on the whole track. At least there was a pretty good battle for the win going on. 20.
