Reports also stated that Petty accepted the back-of-the-pack penalty and raced with a restrictor plate that cost him an estimated 50 horsepower. 6. McDuffie ran one of his old Buick Skylarks in this race, marking both the brand's only appearance in a Cup race all season and the last time former Buick stalwart McDuffie drove one of their cars during the 1970s. McDuffie drove several kinds of car in 1971 but usually drove Mercurys. 7. I'll admit that I sometimes bitch about the quality of competition today, but it's still more competitive now than it was then. 9. This has got to be it, or at least close. 10. possum posted: 07.18.2020 - 3:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @7 - and at a track he hated, no less. @9 - well, in the 65 Southern 500 Wendell Scott finished 10th, 44 laps behind Ned Jarrett. I would not be surprised if that's not the record. 11. However, that may just possibly have been due to the fact that only 6 cars (of 30) finished the race. Seems like we need two prizes for this one. One for furthest back 10th place finisher, and one for furthest back running 10th place finisher. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
