Donnie Allison dominated but blew up after leading 367 laps. Great
finish as Petty looked to have the race won but ran out of gas with 4
laps to go and came out a car length ahead of Pearson
A race at Martinsville with one caution but there were many spins that
didn't bring out the caution

Note: NASCAR experimented the use of a carburator restrictor plates in
this event. Donnie Allison realizes the record for a cars equiped with
the RP in 22.925 sec (822.529 mph). At the time, the record for cars
without the RP is 22.760 sec (83.095 mph) set by Richard Petty the
previous year (April 24, 1970).
