David Pearson's Holman&Moody Mercury Cyclone was a 1969 model.Donnie
Allison had the hot rod this day in the Wood Bros.Mercury,only to go up
in smoke at the end,opening the door for Buddy Baker.

First Sunday race at Darlington. There used to be a law in South
Carolina where racing wasn't allowed on Sunday's

Wasn't but a few years ago that you couldn't even buy food before noon
on a Sunday in Darlington county. Might still be that way.

@3 ironically, 8 years later, the 1979 Rebel 500 at Dalington would also
be Pearson's last race for the Wood Brothers.

A homemade video of this race shows that the Wood Brothers car was a 71
Cyclone .

This was the second consecutive race where Donnie Allison dominated from
the pole in the Wood Brothers #21, only to be sidelined by a blown
engine late in the going. Allison would finally score his only win for
the legendary Wood Brothers a few weeks later at Talladega.
