First official race for new sponsor Winston. They sponsored a handful of
races in 1971 and then the full season in 1972

Dave Marcis Substituted for Bobby Isaac in the #71 Dodge. Bobby Isaac
was hospitalized with kidney stones.

While Dave Marcis drove the Nord Krauskopf owned K & K Insurance Dodge,
he put Bill Seifert in his own car for the race.

marcis was a contender for the win until his engine blew. the final 90
minutes or so of the race was on live television via ABC. when marcis
blew up, i leaped into the air in disgust, cracking a light fixture with
my hand. i cut my hand open and i can still see scars from the incident
today. probably the first good finish of a race on live TV.

Quite the impressive pole streak for the 21 this season (6 or 7 in a
row, since the Daytona Twin & 500 poles are redundant), the limited
schedule Wood Brothers definitely had their qualifying setup dialed in
on their Mercury.

@14 - yeah, 6 in a row is pretty impressive. Overall, tho, the Woods had
better qualifying when that other guy drove for them...check out the
starting positions in 1974.
