Wierd seeing a Cup race as late as 1971 that had less than 15 cars in the event. 3. Bill posted: 12.30.2008 - 4:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is the last Cup race with fewer than 20 cars. 4. The winners prizemoney of just over $2,000 meant that many of the teams who raced at Riverside went straight back home to the East Coast. 7. v2v1v5 posted: 06.09.2012 - 11:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Wins 5 in a row in 3 brands of cars-won Charlotte and Michigan in a 1969 Mercury Cyclone,Dover in a 1971 Ford Torino and Riverside and Houston in a 1970 Dodge Charger ! Not sure if that was ever done before. 8. gearhead15 posted: 10.24.2012 - 9:58 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) The NASCAR records are incorrect about the winning car, it was a '71 Dodge Charger rather than a '70. It was also the car Marty Robbins bought from Bobby, Bobby had to borrow it back to race at Riverside when the financially struggling Holman-Moody team chose to not make the trip. The car raced with Bobby's gold foil numbers but still in the Marty Robbins magenta and neon chartreuse. 9. The promoter at Meyer, Ed Hamlen had become Executive Director at TWS after it had reorganized by its builder. They never did have a large purse at TWS and a few years later was bought by a USAC affiliated group. Meyer was so bumpy, it would rattle your fillings out and loose the bolts of your car off (thank you Permatex). It put on pretty good races there over its history. 15. There were a handful of DNQ Chevrolets at that 82 Daytona 500. 16. A posted: 07.12.2020 - 2:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Cup series has never again come close to having a field this small. Even for the rest of 1971, they only once had fewer than 29 cars and that was a 22 car field. Definitely a race from a dying era at the time this happened. And as others have noted, Hill and Arnold make their only cup starts. Ronnie Chumley, who lasted a bit longer, only started six other career Cup races. The motivation to stop here on the way back across the country from Riverside was not strong! 17. The x2 most notable names to have also done this are Al Unser (1968) & Paul Goldsmith (1956), w/ x16 in total accomplishing the feat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
