JR posted: 05.13.2008 - 6:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) NASCAR was slower to call cautions in those days. Smith probably hit the wall and either made it to his pit or otherwise was out of the way and they kept it green. In the first Daytona 500 there were no cautions but highlights of the race show disabled cars in the infield 6. bduddy posted: 06.03.2008 - 5:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Even in 2008, there are crashes causing retirements that don't cause cautions. 7. Still he won by three laps.. If not for the swap they may have won by 6 or more laps. 11. Steve posted: 08.25.2012 - 5:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I don't think Charlie would have lost much time at all with a driver change. The drivers didn't have huge headrests and HANS devices to fasten, and since pit stops often took half a minute or more, putting Friday Hassler in the car during a pit stop wouldn't have been such a huge setback. 12. Schroeder51 posted: 10.27.2015 - 10:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Approaching half a century later, the speed record set in this race still stands as the fastest Bristol race ever. That record may quite possibly last forever (I HIGHLY doubt we'll ever see a caution free race at Bristol again). 15. Turn 4 posted: 07.14.2017 - 1:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Its possible that the crash brought out a brief caution flag but the caution period was too brief (probably 2 or 3 laps) to be shown and it probably wasn't recorded by officals. 16. Rob posted: 08.01.2018 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) No, I listened to the race on radio and read newspaper reports of the race. There were NO caution flags. 17. Tarheel posted: 07.14.2019 - 5:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Talk about the field getting strung out under a green flag run.... The closest battle on the track at the checkered flag was between Jabe Thomas and Walter Ballard for 10th and 11th, 55 laps down. 18. The 16th place finisher is listed at 238 laps while the 17th place finisher is listed at 262 laps. 19. nascarvd/racing-reference.info posted: 05.05.2020 - 7:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: Charlie Glotzbach #3 was relieved by Friday Hassler on the 351st lap. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
