He never received credit for it, and therefore has only 84 career wins. This would give him 85 and move him past Darrell Waltrip all time. 2. He happily signed it, but also mentioned this race and that he never received credit for it. It appears that it's still a sore spot with him. They should give him the win. 4. This race was different in that two series were mixed--the Grand Nationals and the Grand Americans, which consisted of Mustangs, Camaros, AMC, etc. Nascar did not want a Grand American car to get credit for the win. They actually took 6 of the top 5 spots. There were 6 races that season where the smaller cars were allowed to race. In the same manner, Tiny Lund was not credited with two 1971 wins in a Camaro. 5. It doesn't matter what car it is, a Grand American or not, if someone wins a race in the Winston Cup, it's a win in the WINSTON CUP! Bobby Allison's got 85 career wins. I need say no more. 6. He beat the best of the best that day, no matter "what" he was driving ... definitely deserves number 85. 7. The only other races on TV were edited films of the majors on ABC Wide World of Sports. I wonder if any copies exist. It would be interesting to see if the commentators considered it to be Grand National or Grand Am. 8. biffle16 posted: 03.12.2007 - 9:42 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Also interesting to note: This race was 2 days after Jeff Gordon was born. 9. RaceFanX posted: 08.11.2008 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Despite Bobby not being given credit for the win neither is Richard. According to NASCAR, technically this race had no winner. Also the last Cup race ever at Bowman-Gray Stadium 14. TPMracing posted: 04.20.2009 - 5:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) NASCAR does not dispute that Allison won this race. The issue is that the car he was in does not conform to Winston Cup specs and therefore can't affect the championship points standings. Crediting him with the win in Cup would mean going back and changing the Cup points. The Grand Am cars were invited to compete for the win, but knew they would recieve points only for the Grand Am series. Petty has 200 wins besides this race. If he were credited with this win his total would be 201. 15. Anonymous posted: 05.10.2009 - 12:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 29 cars at Bowman-Gray... must have been crowded! 16. It was so fluky with everything back then, but still Bobby should be given credit! 17. Bobby should have this win. NASCAR asked him to come, and for that reason alone he should've won. As for those who say Bobby is a whiner, maybe Bobby knew more than the people he was driving for most of the time, and knew what he wanted with a racecar. One of the last true drivers. If I was him, I'd hate Waltrip too for being a (.....) most of the time. 22. If NASCAR didn't want the Grand Am cars to win they shouldn't have allowed them in the field. 23. v2v1v5 posted: 03.25.2014 - 2:01 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) The Mustang Bobby Allison won this race in is a 1969 model.NASCAR has always been very unfair to Bobby Allison simply because he butted heads with them.Fact:this race was #34 on the 1971 Grand National schedule! The traditional Myers Bros.(Billy and Bobby)Memorial"250" that dates back to at least 1961,maybe before. This race was never a "combo" race of any kind. The independants were upset over "cheap" purses and some other issues, and stayed home or parked their cars after a few laps. Then due to the dwindling car count at these smaller races, starting with this race,NASCAR needed"field fillers" and let the Grand American cars run. This was not new.It had been done several times in the past. They did it at the 1969 Talladega"500".If Richard Childress would have drove his Camaro to victory,do you think it wouldn't have counted?Of course it would have!By the way,a precedent had already been set by NASCAR at the June 13 1954 Linden Airport"100" in New Jersey!Al Keller drove a Jaguar(not a legal GN car)to victory. They laxed the rules and allowed them to compete.Al Keller deservingly is given credit for his win.NASCAR has now given Tiny Lund credit for his 2 1971 wins in his Camaro at Hickory and North Wilkesboro!Bobby Allison doesn't get credit for this victory?Totally absurd! It's not rocket science!I think NASCAR does the 14,000 fans that were there that day an injustice.Funny, they count the race as a start for Allison and they count his 2nd place the following week in the Mustang at the West Virginia "500".It is very wrong that NASCAR doesn't give Bobby Allison credit for winning this race, because he does have 85 career wins. One other thing too remember March 17,1970,when Bobby Allison became the 1st to go 200 mph at Talladega in the Mario Rossi#22 Dodge Daytona,200.008mph he said on the 4th lap of testing. He talked about that a few years back in an interview. 24. I'm sure the regular GN drivers had some money come out of their pockets. 26. Tide1732 posted: 02.05.2017 - 1:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David Ray Boggs gets first top-10 here 27. With some different leadership in NASCAR that seems to be more welcoming of new ideas than in the past, it would be a wonderful time to finally give Bobby Allison credit for his 85th win. 32.
