Stommelen was killed in a race in 1983. 5. Dega77 posted: 04.25.2012 - 9:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First race I ever went to. Breaker047 posted: 04.12.2015 - 1:06 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Details regarding Hamilton's last lap crash, per Greg Fielden's awesome "40 Years of Stock Car Racing" series, volume 3: Allison rode under the white flag with Petty and Hamilton tucked in his draft. On the backstretch, Allison darted to the inside in an effort to break the draft. Petty made a stab at the lead as the trio hit the third turn. The Plymouths of Petty and Hamilton came together. Hamilton spun off the track and became disabled in turn 4. Petty's car wobbled before he got it under control. Allison raced on and got to the finish line 2.1 seconds ahead of Petty. Hamilton got credit for taking third place. 9. KRS posted: 02.09.2017 - 7:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Great race....Bobby was amazing 10. Bobby Allison won in a Mustang, Wayne Andrews was second, Gary Myers, E.J. Trivette and Jim Vaughn were the rest of the top 5. Dick Brooks was 9th, Tiny Lund 11th, Red Farmer 19th, Buck Baker 24th, and Billy Hagan 25th. This was the last stand alone race for G/A in 1971 as all the rest were run as combo races with Grand National. 11. Yes, Darrell's car was originally built as a 1967 Fairlane and yes, Mario did win the 67 Daytona 500 in that car. Holman Moody rebodied that Fairlane as a 69 Mercury Cyclone Late Model Sportsman. Darrell purchased that car and wrecked it at the Permatex 300 at Daytona. Instead of repairing the car as a 69 Mercury, the car was rebodied again, at Holman Moody, as a 1971 Mercury Cyclone Grand National car. The car Rolf Stommelen drove was sold to Wendell Scott. That is the Boss 429 powered car that really ended Scott's career. This is the car he was involved in the big crash at the 1973 Talladega 500. The car was a total loss. 13. oldgrandnational posted: 04.06.2020 - 6:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wendell Scott was involved in the big wreck at the Winston 500, not the Talladega 500.
