About half of the top 30 in points were off by less than 5 points from the official total. I couldn't figure out where I made a mistake so I guess I'll assume the lap tallies varied slightly when NASCAR gave out points. The only huge difference in my calculations was Buddy Arrington, who came out with about 300 more points than he should have, putting him up in 20th instead of 22nd. No other positions were different. Here's the count after race 1: 1) Richard Petty 286.25 2) Bobby Allison 284.25 3) Bobby Isaac 278.5 4) Ray Elder 276.5 5) Hershel McGriff 273.25 6) Kevin Terris 266.25 7) James Hylton 264.25 8) Elmo Langley 259.75 9) Friday Hassler 255.25 10) Cecil Gordon 253.25 11) John Soares, Jr. 250 12) Carl Joiner, Jr. 246.75 13) Dick Bown 243.5 14) Walter Ballard 239 15) Raymond Williams 237 16) Don Noel 235 17) Charlie Roberts 231.75 18) J.D. McDuffie 226 19) Johnny Anderson 221.5 20) Ivan Baldwin 215.75 14. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 01.01.2016 - 2:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Please don't forget the PE (post entry), the USAC and FIA drivers did not received points. Also the penalty and NASCAR discretion. Just the real and official driver standings make sense. 15. Anonymoose posted: 01.01.2016 - 9:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ah, that makes sense. Buddy Arrington must have been a PE in a couple of races. But he was the only one that was off by more than a few points, and the only one that ended up in a different position in the end (obviously, the two drivers he displaced were in a different position too). 16. Clem Proctor was second followed by Ed Bradshaw, Ivan Baldwin, and Bob Foster. 17. While flying with David Pearson from Atlanta to Los Angeles he got very sick and the plane had to make an unscheduled landing at Amarillo, TX. In local hospital Moore underwent surgery (appendectomy) and was unable to make it to Riverside. Pearson really struggled with his Ford Torino, blowing two engines in first two days of time trials. On Saturday he was the fastest in the third qualification round and managed to start 30th. He slowly made his way through the field and was running 3rd when a stone or some piece of debris hit him in the radiator causing engine to overheat. 18. RaceFanX posted: 01.09.2020 - 9:37 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) This race marked the beginning of the iconic partnership between Richard Petty and STP as a full-time arrangement. The deal came together late so the King won this race in an all-Petty Blue #43 Plymouth as the team didn't have time to repaint the car in the new two-tone scheme with STP red that would become so iconic in the years to come. This was just the third time Petty ever finished a race at Riverside but just like the other two when he did he drove the #43 straight to victory lane. The partnership between Petty and STP would become truly one of the longest lasting and most legendary in all of motorsports. STP would sponsor the King throughout the rest of his NASCAR career and stuck with the Petty team even after he hung up the helmet through the middle of the 2000 season with associate sponsorships and one-off deals with throwback schemes common in the years since. The late, great Bobby Hamilton would drive an all-blue #43 STP Pontiac in both 1996 Cup road course races specifically to call back to the King's win in this one that kicked off the relationship. 21. I assume it was last-minute and the statisticians at the time never made this change when publishing the final results (Noel usually ran #88 in Winston West). Also, I'm not sure why they listed his car as a '71 Dodge, as it appears he ran a '71 Ford. The same stats people must've been confusing him with Keselowski. Noel had ran multiple full seasons in Winston West with Fords at this time. Photo evidence: https://archive.petersen.org/pages/view.php?ref=438502 * The photo is mislabeled as 1971, but the Winston Cup decal should be a dead giveaway as being from 1972. 22. The owner is likely Dean Barnicle. Another #42 '71 Ford owned by Barnicle also ran at the Texas 500 in College Station later that year, driven by Jim Whitt, which might help support this evidence. 23. nascarvd/racing-reference.info posted: 05.10.2020 - 9:53 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) First Cup race with the new lighter wheels, legal for the first time in Grand National competition.
