I was watching some show in the 90s that talked about this race. Marty ran the last part of the race without a restrictor plate becase he knew he wasn't a contender and he "just wanted to see what it felt like to blow by those guys". He said he was grinning from ear to ear in his car passing the top guys left and right. Lol, he knew how to have fun. 7. Raced a lot of late model races in the 60s and 70s throughout Alabama and at Nashville Speedway. He drove several races at Nashville for one my dad's friends, Roy Counce. Raced a Benward Construction Chevelle. http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o96/toomuchcountry/Racing%20Other/PADDLEFOOTWALES1.jpg 12. He knew he wasn't in a position to possibly win anymore so he took his plate out and ran circles around everyone (and made up a bunch of his laps) just to see how it felt and got disqualified for it. if you do that nowadays, NA$CAR would probably fine you at least 500,000 and suspend you for the rest of the season, unless your name is Johnson or Busch 13. His brother-in-law, Bobby Allison ask him to build the race shop in Hueytown. Marty Robbins and my husband became friends. Robert (Bob) Sundman did a great deal of research and development in creating race cars and parts. Along with running the Bobby Allison Race Shop he raced at BIR in Birmingham. He worked with Marty and was there for the 1972 race team. I have 2 custom team racing jackets (1972 race) that belong to my late husband, Robert Sundman...they are in perfect condition. They are purple with the yellow trim and Marty Robbins embrodierd on the back. I also have the record jacket with Marty's autograph on it...the record cover has Marty standing in front of his 1972 car. I am looking for a buyer for these items. I also have 2 of his Bobbie Allison Jackets with all the sponsors patches on them. If you know of someone interested please contact me at artist_bythesea@yahoo.com 18. Ivan Balakhonov posted: 10.09.2016 - 3:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The finish was somewhat controversial since during final laps Bobby Isaac repeatedly ignored the black flag for unattached gas cap on his Dodge. After the race he was fined $1,500 (rulebook had several options in this regard) and money were deducted from his winnings. His total was $12,395 (according to Southern Motorsports Journal) but if he went to pit lane to serve the flag and finished 4th his total would've been just $6,095. Hoss Ellington was infuriated by this decision and vowed to boycott other races he intended to run later that season. Also, during one of the cautions a cleanup truck overturned on the banking. Two workers in the back of the track luckily escaped major injuries. 22. The #21 team was on a roll in early 1972 as ran seven of the first 11 races and won four of them with Pearson and A.J. Foyt both claiming two wins apiece (and one of Foyt's was the Daytona 500). 23. nascarman posted: 04.11.2018 - 8:58 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Some notes on this race: *The grand marshal for the event was Auburn football head coach, Ralph "Shug" Jordan. *The race had a political presence as well. The pace car driver was Cornelia Wallace, the first lady of Alabama. Her husband, George Wallace, was campaigning to be the Democratic nominee for President in the upcoming election against President Nixon. Bill France Sr, a close friend of the Alabama governor, ran Wallace's Florida campaign in March which saw him win every county in the primary. The night before the race, Wallace won the North Carolina Democratic primary and France introduced Cornelia to the crowd by saying, "Let's have a hand for the next first lady of the United States." Eight days after this race, Governor Wallace was shot four times and left permanantly paralyzed from the waist down. Riding in the back seat of the pace car was future US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn. *As was noted earlier, a pickup truck flipped down the embankment during the first caution of the race. From the Herald-Journal: "A freak accident on the 1st caution when Bobby Allison's Chevrolet blew on the 35th lap. A speedway truck dropping oil drying compound slid off the high banks in turns one and two and turned over ending upright. The two men in the truck, Charles Freeman and Randy Bradley, suffered minor head and shoulder injuries. There were no broken bones." 24. The only thing is, his cars had engine problems in the long races. All 3 engine failures occurred at the 500 mile races of Rockingham, Talladega, and Dover. Even when his engines were being strained at the long races, he still did well, getting top 5's at most of the 500+ mile races that season. 26. Yes it is a different make, but as Darrell explained, while the kept the chassis, they would re-body the cars. 27. JSPorts posted: 11.18.2020 - 1:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's cool. He still has it today. 29. possum posted: 11.18.2020 - 6:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 - "it is a different make", while technically true, is a bit misleading. Re-bodying a Ford to a Mercury or vice versa was easily doable since the engine was the same and the body differences were small. The same is true for Dodges and Plymouths. But rebodying from a Ford to a Dodge or Chevy couldn't be easily done because of engine differences; you'd usually start with a new chassis if you were switching brands (switching between GM makes wasn't often done because in that era each GM make had it's own engine, and Chevy/Pontiac/Olds had enough differences in layout that it wasn't a straight swap. After GM standardized on the small block Chevy it became trivial to swap GM bodies, but that was some while in the future.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
