In one of his last good outings, Wendell qualified strong and ran up front during the race but the engine gave out and he had to settle for 22nd. 3. Richard Petty and Maurice Petty both played themselves in this movie. Richard Petty's engine quit and in the closing credits of the movie, it shows him throw his hands up in the air after exiting his car. At the time, this was the only big race Richard Petty had not won. 4. 18fan posted: 09.30.2008 - 1:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) Petty didn't win the 600 until 1975. Allison would have won but pitted with 30 laps to go with two flat tires. Also Buddy Baker shows no class waving to the fans while taking the white flag. It was his first of two consecutive World 600s. 5. RaceFanX posted: 10.30.2008 - 9:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 1972 Rookie of the Year Larry Smith's best career finish, 6th 6. I'm sure the Embodiment of Class Bobby Allison would have been much better if he had won. Poor Bobby :( 9. Another crewman located down pit road ran out and signaled Buddy there was a problem, then attached the cap. After the race Buddy said that this crewman worked full-time for Bobby Allison, though it is unclear from the story what car he served during the race. James Hylton was driving with average speed of 90mph because of the lost head gasket. When officials black-flagged him and came for explanation he told them that his engine wouldn't hold water at more than 5,000 rpm and if he went faster than that it threw out the water. Inexplicably, he was allowed to continue. 13. I'm practice the car was 9 miles per hour off the pace, leading to jeers from his fellow drivers that he just couldn't drive top equipment, that is until Bobby Allison climbed in the car and went the same speed. Wendell did the best he could with it until the engine grenaded. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
