This was also the last win in Cup by a NASCAR team based on the West Coast Last start for California driver Dick Guldstrand 2. Penske's first start as a NASCAR Cup owner was at the first 1972 Riverside race, not this one. 5. Having qualified his car in Riverside he took a plane to get to Myrtle Beach where he was scheduled to drive in a Grand National East race on Saturday. His car turned out to be uncompetitive due to mechanical ailment and it seemed that the long trip had been in vain. Luckily to Elmo LeeRoy Yarbrough got ill and vacated the Bill Seifert's Ford. Seifert asked Langley to drive the car and Elmo won his first race in 6 years in it. For unknown reason he couldn't catch his plane to LAX and reached Riverside when Golden State 400 was 8 minutes old and his car was being driven by Dick May. Langley relieved May on the first pit stop but of course was credited with exactly zero points despite a top-10 finish. 11.
