That has to be a mistake. 10. ScottB posted: 04.01.2020 - 11:38 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Not sure it was the case in this specific race, but probably... At the time it was common for promoters to pay big name drivers appearance money just to make sure they showed up. This race only had 28 entries, lowest of the season, and the overall payout was also less than most of the events on the schedule that season. Isaac was a very big name at the time and could have negotiated some money based on the ticket sales he'd bring in. Parsons had only one Cup win at that point and was still a rising star in comparison. The independent drivers hated this practice and often complained about it, since it was helping out the drivers who were already well funded take home even more money. 11. rm posted: 04.01.2020 - 5:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) At Asheville the year before this, the already-short field made up mostly of independents protested that practice by parking their cars well before the finish of the race, leaving just 5 cars running at the end. The practice has more or less remained in the Cup series over the years in different forms, with the Winner's Circle program and the current charter system achieving the same purpose. 12. This layout meet its end to all the track issues that plagued this race. A pothole actually developed in the track surface during qualifying but little was done to repair it until race time Saturday night, leading to a delayed start. The repair crew actually worked on the track by hooking a road roller up to a tow truck and then driving the roller up the banking. The repairs took about 90 minute to complete. After this race the track would be rebuilt over the winter to feature just 18 degrees of banking and it would continue with that layout to the modern day. Race winner Bobby Allison helped with the redesign work for the track. Bobby Allison and Richard Petty were the class of the field in this one with Allison being just a little faster than the King; leading the most laps on the way to victory. Petty was slowed by a one-lap penalty for passing the stop paddle at the end of the pit lane; leading to a lot of screaming in the pits from the King, his pit crew, Allison's Junior Johnson-led crew all directed at NASCAR official Bill Gazaway who made the penalty call. The King would make up his lap and still finish second to Allison. Darrell Waltrip's first top-5 came in just his fourth NASCAR Cup series start. The Nashville crowd was thrilled to see its local track champion do so well against the big boys, even if he was far behind he still turned in a great third-place run driving a five-year car (This Mercury was that same ex-Mario Andretti Daytona winner Waltrip ran all year in 1973) You have to feel bad for Coo Coo Marlin. He was a Nashville track champion many times over and used his knowledge of the local track to qualify a strong third for this event...and his #14 Chevrolet got taken out on the opening lap as he and Isaac crashed together. LeeRoy Yarbrough pulled off on the pace laps and parked his #45 Ford without explanation. This was his third-to-last Cup race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
