Joe Frasson drove in relief for G.C. Spencer.

Car Racing Book" by Jerry Bledsoe [an awesome book by the way]

It kind of revolves around this race, devoting the beginning and end to
the 1972 Southern 500 weekend with some historic info in between.

Wendell Scott was in the race, but was never recorded for some reason.
He drove his regular "34" car and got in an accident with G.C. Spencer
during the race.

It was amazing to watch Allison and Pearson fight they way they did with
both drivers running as clean and as hard as they could. Every pit stop
Pearson would get ahead of Allison including the last stop with just a
few to go. Both drivers stopped for fuel but Pearson's stop was two
seconds quicker than Allison's. Allison stormed back and pulled ahead of
Pearson.

Several of the lapped down cars were causing problems. On the final lap,
I couldn't tell who it was but Allison had to make a daring move high
around the car. It was a tight squeeze but Allison, being the master
that he was, made it through without a problem. Pearson closed late but
just didn't have enough. It was one heck of a battle.

I believe this race had two different surfaces. Does anyone remember
hearing about that?

Note: Earl Brooks #5, initially qualified in 33rd position, was withdraw
after a crash in last practice (= DNQ). Frank Warren #79 (initially dnq)
bought the ride of Brooks and used her starting spot.
Note: George Altheide drove the #0 in qualifying but J.D. McDuffie
(initially dnq with the #70) drove the car in the race.

Dick Brooks who tangled with Buddy Baker on lap 137 admitted that he
lost concentration while reaching for the tube of water while entering
turn one. Baker commented: "And that is the reason why Pettys don't
permit me taking a bottle of water inside the car"

I wonder what Buddy could've done with more time in the Petty car. I
guess we'll never know, but he could've been a perennial championship
contender.

I have heard that there was a driver that was jealous of Larry Smith's
sponsor deal who relived Jabe Thomas and subsequently used Jabe's car to
take out Smith. The resulting melee wrecked several good cars including
those of Smith and Thomas.

@16 I highly doubt it...but it's possible. If it were true, it would
have been an extremely interesting event...

Bobby Allison bests David Pearson in a battle of the stock car legends
as he becomes just the third man to win back-to-back Southern 500s.
