Essentially, both cars were destroyed as the race came to an end (Allison's was smoking, notably). It was the peak of their rivalry. In victory lane, a fan tried to attack Petty, who was defended by his helmet-wielding brother Maurice. 3. Ed Negre (from Don Tarr) and Henley Gray (from James Cox) also stepped into other rides after missing the field in their own entries. 5. I wonder whether he really had any intentions to race on Sunday. A fan who attacked Petty in Victory Lane was not the only troublemaker. People began to throw beer cans onto the race track after the finish and several others jumped the fence but were neutralized by police. Also, there was a controversial moment when the last caution waved. Cecil Gordon was penalized a lap for passing the pace car. Gordon's crew and Maurice Petty immediately addressed NASCAR officials, because Gordon was following Allison at the moment and then Bobby too passed the pace car and got away with it. It's absolutely unclear who was at fault there since no video is available but tempers flared for a moment. Quote of the race, by Richard Petty: "If I had films of what happened I could sue him (Allison). For what? Assault, intent to kill or something like that." 8. Berrier won a Grand National East race at Bowman Gray doing a one-off for Donlavey about a month and a half earlier so its not surprising Junie gave the short track veteran a call up to play with the big boys. Berrier qualified well but a blown engine in the race itself doomed his hopes of a good finish in his first Cup appearance at North Wilkesboro since 1957. This wasn't the end of the association between Donlavey and the Barrier family. Max's son Ed Berrier would follow in his dad's footsteps and later race Donlavey's famous #90 Ford more than two decades later, making over a dozen appearances behind the wheel in 1999 and 2000. 9. Petty would win here again in early 1973 before Allison finally exacted his revenge by breaking his streak with a win in the next running of this race later in the year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
