It was widely assumed that these ruled helped volume production wedge engines, especially that used by Chevrolet. Buddy Baker and Harry Hyde brought their usual Chrysler Hemi engine end skipped all practice sessions and the first round of qualification grumbling and grumbling about the disadvantage they were put at (Pettys on the other hand decided to use wedge engines and decided not to push the issue). The rumor was that it had been Chrysler's decision to have at least one team using a Hemi engine just to see how it would be affected by new rules so Hyde's reaction was just a theater. Chevrolet indeed dominated, but after Yarborough and Allison retired from the race it was David Pearson's show. Richard Petty, who was following #21 Mercury for the final 20 laps, accused Wood brothers of sandbagging, saying: "Pearson was so much faster he just played with me until 10 laps were left to race and then he just took off like he had an extra gear in his car". 6. rateus posted: 05.30.2020 - 4:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DNQ #01 Earle Canavan - '72 Plymouth #06 Neil Castles - '73 Dodge #09 Charles Barrett - '71 Ford #22 Jimmy Crawford - '72 Plymouth #29 Bill Hollar - '71 Mercury #36 HB Bailey - '73 Pontiac #37 Bobby Johns - '72 Chevy #38 Tony Bettenhausen Jr - '72 Chevy #40 DK Ulrich - '71 Ford #77 Charlie Roberts - '71 Ford #80 Phil Finney - '72 Chevy #85 Ronnie Daniel - '72 Chevy #89 Johnny Barnes - '71 Mercury Withdrew #44 Richard D Brown - '71 Chevy (qualified P27) The starting lineup with the official program was printed before the final qualifying session and helpfully lists all entrants who hadn't yet made the field (most notably Buddy Baker). 7.
