Does anybody know if rain affected the race in any way? 2. JMiller posted: 06.30.2009 - 12:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes it did. According to newspaper accounts, the race was run under threatening skies from the green flag. On Lap 5, Baxter Price (in his Cup debut) spun on the front stretch and was drilled by Darrell Waltrip. Dick Brooks plowed into them and 10 other cars piled up. Price, whose car burst into flames, went to the hospital with first-degree burns while Bill Champion dislocated his shoulder. The race was red-flagged for 1 hour, 10 minutes for cleanup. When showers hit later in the race, NASCAR decided to let the cars roll under caution until the skies cleared. They wound up running 86 laps under the yellow before restarting! The win was Petty's seventh straight at the Richmond Fairgrounds, five of which were by at least one lap. After running second to Bobby Allison in the spring '74 race, he won again in the fall '74 and spring '75 races, the latter by 6 laps. 3. myself posted: 01.26.2012 - 1:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (5) Sounds like a typical "let Petty win one" nascar race 4.
