Yarborough and Petty were said to have had big engines in their cars, and Allison even filed a protest against the top 2 finishers, but NASCAR didn't change the results. 7. He had parked the car earlier in the race and when NASCAR wanted to inspect the engine in it, his car owner Nord Krauskopf refused. Baker was disqualified and credited with finishing dead last. 20. It was Saturday morning when during a surprise inspection of several cars NASCAR officials discovered an illegal plate fitted under the carburetor and operated from the cockpit. With the device in operation, it allowed an increase in fuel and air mixture hence giving increase in horsepower. Hoss Ellington came with somewhat lame excuse that this device had been installed on the car after the qualifying simply for testing purposes but the pole had been won legally. Still, the car was disqualified and only with the help of Richard Howard, speedway president, the compromise had been made. Glotzbach requalified on Saturday and the field was increased from 40 cars to 41. As for Baker, his story is more weird. Apparently it was one of those moments when Nord Krauskopf decided he had enough. It was his order to park the car and later he commented on his decision: "Ever since the plate change on July 4th we haven't been competitive. Buddy goes out there and drives his heart out and has no chance of winning. Today, when Cale ran off and left everybody, was the crushing blow. We just called it off". The reason for disqualification was that Krauskopf didn't let officials to perform post-race tech inspection of his car. If we believe Nord, #71 Dodge had been checked several times already during the week so this decision was another gesture of disappointment. I'd rather not comment on Allison vs NASCAR situation, its details are well known. Honestly, my reaction can be summed up with this: "What a fustercluck it was!" 21. What were the circumstances that caused that event to be cancelled with such little notice 22. nascarman posted: 03.21.2018 - 3:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) From what I found it was due to "economics stemming from the oil crisis." 23. Even then, teams with a backup car would qualify the backup car just for the money, if there was money paid out to positions that low. 26. possum posted: 05.26.2018 - 5:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 - I beleive NASCAR's official reason was the Arab oil embargo. The real reason, I think, was that the track was already in financial trouble, and with the gasoline shortage that fall there was a very high likelyhood that not enough fans would attend to cover costs. The track was closed for the following two years and reopened in 1976. 27. Brown qualified the 44, but let Ed Negre, who DNQed,start the race in his car to allow Ed to stay up in points. Junior Johnson served as gas man for Cale's car. During an early pit stop he got gasoline in his eyes and had to receive medical attention, later continuing to serve as gas man with goggles on. Buddy Baker led several laps, but none counted following his DQ. According to the MRN broadcast, Roy Mayne was in the 25 instead of Jabe Thomas. Not sure what the deal was, it could have been they let Jabe start the race to maintain his points position, then let Roy actually run the race, but that's speculation on my part. 28. The Arab oil embargo soon went into effect and resulted in cancellation of the Texas race and shortening of 1974 races by 10%. 29. zuel660 posted: 01.09.2020 - 10:57 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) @26 this has to be one of the very few, or only race ever paced by a mobile home! Must've looked kinda funny seeing that circling the track. 30. When Paul Tyler withdrew he was in the race but stepped aside for Jabe Thomas. Which, by my count, was the 6th time this season that that particular switch had occurred! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
