This was the only race in 1974 to change it's name to fit with the races
being shortened that year.

Lennie Pond hit the guard rail hard after blowing a motor and bent it,
causing the race to be red flagged while the track crew went and bent it
back into place with a log

Bobby Allison ran out of gas on the last lap while in 2nd place but held
position.

Pearson was the class of the field, but his winning margin would've been
smaller, but Bobby Allison ran out of gas on the backstretch and beat
Buddy Baker by three feet for second.

I was in Boy Scouts from June 1973 to July 1980. The Darlington Raceway
would admit Scouts for free for the Rebel 500. This was the first race
that I attended. David Pearson won this one and I would witness him
winning two more (1976, 1980). And who will forget the pit road fiasco
in 1979?

This race took place three days after the infamous 1974 Super Outbreak.

Hershel McGriff was a second Petty Enterprises entry for this race but
the team couldn't get the car up to speed and withdrew before qualifying.
